Wild Boar

About the Wild Boar

Tough, adaptable, and built like a tank. The wild boar has a coarse bristly coat, prominent tusks, and a powerful frame. Boars are omnivores — they root through soil for tubers, eat fallen fruit, and scavenge carcasses. They are the third major prey species for leopards in Wilpattu. Piglets arrive in litters of 4-8 and stay with their mother in family groups called sounders.

Wild boar are one of the most reliable sightings in Wilpattu. You will often find family groups rooting along the edges of water bodies. Their presence signals a healthy ecosystem — they need a mix of forest and open areas. Leopards prey on them regularly, especially smaller piglets and sub-adults.
