Wilpattu Dry Season (May-September): Complete Safari Guide
The dry season (May to September) is Wilpattu's prime wildlife viewing window. As the villus shrink and the vegetation thins, wildlife concentrates around the remaining water sources, creating the most predictable and concentrated viewing conditions of the year. This is when leopards are most visible, sloth bears are most active, and the park delivers its highest sighting success rates.
Weather
Temperatures 26-35°C. Hot and dry throughout. No significant rainfall. The landscape transitions from green through golden-brown to dry. Dust becomes a factor. Clear skies dominate. Mornings start cool (22-24°C) but heat builds rapidly.
Wildlife Highlights
Leopard sightings peak (June-August). Sloth bear activity peaks (May-July). Elephant herds concentrate around permanent villus. Spotted deer gather in large herds. All wildlife is more visible due to thinner vegetation and predictable water sources.
Photography
Best conditions for mammal photography. Predictable wildlife locations. Clear golden-hour light. Dust creates atmospheric beams. The trade-off is midday heat haze. Dawn drives are the most productive.
