Wilpattu in January: Green Season Safari Guide
January is the heart of Wilpattu's green season. The northeast monsoon has filled every villu to the brim, the forest is deep green, and migratory birds are at their peak numbers. This is the best month for birding in Wilpattu, though mammal sightings require more patience as wildlife is dispersed across the abundant water sources.
Weather
January temperatures range from 22-30°C. The landscape is lush and green after the monsoon. Humidity is moderate. Occasional brief showers are possible, especially early in the month. Mornings can be cool — a light jacket is recommended for the 5:30 AM safari start. The days are warm but not as intense as the dry season months.
Wildlife Highlights
Migratory birds peak in January — over 80 species present. Greater flamingos at Kokkare Villu. Painted storks, openbills, and spot-billed pelicans are abundant. Leopards are visible but dispersed across the park — tracking is harder due to thick vegetation. Elephants are spread out. This is a birder's month more than a mammal-spotter's month.
Photography
Lush green landscapes, dramatic cloudy skies, and lotus flowers in bloom. The light is softer than in the dry season, with more cloud cover providing natural diffusion. Ideal conditions for bird photography. The green foliage provides beautiful backgrounds for wildlife portraits.
