Wilpattu in December: Green Season with Holiday Magic
December is the green season at its most beautiful. The villus are full, the forest is a deep saturated green, and migratory birds are at near-peak numbers. This is the month for travellers who want to see Wilpattu in its most lush, vibrant state. Christmas week brings a brief spike in visitors, but the park is still quiet compared to the dry season.
Weather
Temperatures 22-30°C. Cool mornings and evenings. Rain is possible but less frequent than October-November. The landscape is lush and green. Villus are at capacity. Lotus flowers in bloom. The park smells of wet earth and blooming vegetation.
Wildlife Highlights
Bird diversity is at its highest — both resident and migratory species present. Painted storks, openbills, pelicans, flamingos, and waders are abundant. Leopards are present but sightings are not guaranteed — the thick cover and abundant water make tracking difficult. Elephants are dispersed but regular at major villus. This is a birder's paradise.
Photography
Lush green landscape, lotus flowers, mist over villus. Bird photography is excellent. The soft light of the green season produces rich colours. Morning mist creates atmospheric conditions. Post-rain reflections offer creative opportunities.
