White-Breasted Kingfisher

Halcyon smyrnensis

About the White-Breasted Kingfisher

The white-breasted kingfisher is a stunning bird with a bright cobalt blue back and wings, chestnut head and belly, and a distinctive white patch on the chest and throat. Its large, coral-red bill is perfectly adapted for catching fish, though in Wilpattu, it actually feeds more on large insects, lizards, and frogs than fish. It is one of the most photographed birds in the park due to its vivid colours and tendency to perch in the open.

Wilpattu Significance

White-breasted kingfishers are common throughout Wilpattu and are often the first bird visitors photograph on their safari. They perch prominently on branches overhanging water, fence posts, and power lines, diving with dramatic precision to catch prey below. Their presence is consistent year-round. Their rattling call — a series of sharp, descending notes — is a familiar sound across the park.
