Golden Jackal

Canis aureus

About the Golden Jackal

The golden jackal is a medium-sized canid found across Wilpattu. With its golden-brown coat and bushy tail, it is often mistaken for a fox by first-time visitors. Jackals are highly adaptable omnivores — they hunt small mammals and birds, scavenge carcasses, and eat fruits. They are monogamous and form lifelong pair bonds, often seen hunting together. Their haunting calls at dawn and dusk are one of Wilpattu's most evocative sounds.

Wilpattu Significance

Golden jackals are common throughout Wilpattu and regularly sighted on game drives. They are most active at dawn and dusk, often seen trotting along park roads. Their howling calls are a signature sound of a Wilpattu evening. They compete with leopards for small prey and are often seen scavenging at leopard kill sites once the leopard has had its fill.

Did You Know?

Golden jackal pairs mate for life. The pair hunts together and raises pups cooperatively. Older pups from previous litters often stay with their parents to help raise the next litter — a behavior called cooperative breeding.
