Anuradhapura Before Your Safari: Best Temples, Ruins, and How to Combine

Why Anuradhapura Belongs in Your Itinerary
Anuradhapura is the primary gateway to Wilpattu, just 35 kilometres from the park entrance. Most visitors pass through it en route to the park. Most should stay longer.
This ancient capital of Sri Lanka (4th century BCE – 11th century CE) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with some of the most remarkable archaeological remains in South Asia.
Why it matters: - It gives context to Wilpattu — the Sinhalese kings who built Anuradhapura also maintained the forests that became the national park - The ancient irrigation systems (reservoirs, canals) that sustained this civilisation are the same hydrological principles that sustain Wilpattu's villus - It breaks up the travel from Colombo to Wilpattu beautifully
Essential Sites in Anuradhapura
Sri Maha Bodhi — The most sacred tree in Buddhism. A cutting from the original Bodhi tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment, brought to Sri Lanka in 236 BCE. It is the oldest historically documented tree in the world. Visiting at dawn or dusk is a serene experience.
Ruwanwelisaya Stupa — A massive white dome (103 metres in diameter) built in 140 BCE. One of the world's largest ancient stupas. Best seen at sunrise when the white surface glows golden.
Jetavanaramaya — At 122 metres, this was the third tallest structure in the ancient world (after the Pyramids). Built from an estimated 93 million bricks. A breathtaking monument to ancient engineering.
Thuparama — The oldest stupa in Sri Lanka, built in the 3rd century BCE. Originally shaped like a heap of paddy, it marks the site where the collarbone relic of Buddha was enshrined.
Isurumuniya Temple — A rock temple with ancient carvings, including the famous 'Isurumuniya Lovers' relief. Peaceful setting with a natural rock pool.
