About the Crested Serpent Eagle

The crested serpent eagle is a medium-to-large raptor found across the Indian subcontinent. It has a dark brown body, a white underside with dark barring, a yellow face, and a distinctive black-and-white crest at the back of its head. Its broad, rounded wings and short tail are adaptations for forest hunting. As its name suggests, it specializes in hunting snakes — it drops from a perch or from a hover, pinning the snake with its powerful talons before delivering a killing bite.

Wilpattu Significance

The crested serpent eagle is the most frequently seen raptor in Wilpattu. Its distinctive three-note call — a loud, piercing 'klii-klii-klii' — is one of the park's signature sounds. It is often seen perched on tall trees at the edge of villus, scanning for prey. Its presence indicates a healthy snake population, which in turn indicates a healthy rodent population.

Conservation Status

Least Concern. Stable population across Wilpattu and Sri Lanka's dry zone.

Did You Know?

The crested serpent eagle has specially adapted scales on its legs that protect it from snake bites. The scales are thicker and more overlapping than those of other eagles, forming a natural armour against fangs.
