Wilpattu Safari Glossary

The footprint of an animal, especially a big cat like a leopard. Our guides are experts at reading fresh pugmarks on Wilpattu's sandy tracks to track and locate leopards. The size, depth, and freshness of a pugmark tells an experienced naturalist how recently the animal passed and in which direction.

Natural, rain-fed freshwater lakes that are the defining feature of Wilpattu National Park. Wilpattu has over 60 villus scattered across the park. These are wildlife hotspots where animals gather to drink, making them the best locations for game drives. The word 'villus' is unique to Wilpattu — no other Sri Lankan park has this ecosystem.
