About the Changeable Hawk-Eagle

The changeable hawk-eagle is a medium-to-large eagle with a prominent crest at the back of its head. Its name comes from the variability of its plumage — there are multiple colour morphs ranging from pale to almost black. It has broad, rounded wings and a long tail — adaptations for manoeuvring through forest canopy while hunting. It preys on birds, mammals, and reptiles, often hunting by soaring above the canopy before stooping on prey.

Wilpattu Significance

Changeable hawk-eagles are resident in Wilpattu and seen regularly by visitors. They are most often encountered perched in tall trees at the edge of forest clearings or soaring overhead. Their presence indicates healthy populations of their prey species. They are especially active during the dry season when foliage is thinner and hunting is easier.

Conservation Status

Least Concern. Stable population in Wilpattu and across Sri Lanka's protected areas.

Best Season to See

Year-round. Most visible during the dry season (May-September).

Did You Know?

The changeable hawk-eagle has a unique hunting strategy in Wilpattu. It often follows troops of toque macaques and tufted grey langurs, waiting for them to flush out prey as they move through the forest. This association benefits both species — the monkeys get an early warning of danger, and the eagle gets easier hunting.
