About the Ceylon Spurfowl
The Ceylon spurfowl is a medium-sized, chicken-like bird endemic to Sri Lanka. It is found only in the island's dry zone forests, and Wilpattu is one of the best places to see it. The male has striking red legs and facial skin, a chestnut body with white spots, and distinctive multiple spurs on its legs. The female is duller with brown plumage. Unlike junglefowl that prefer forest edges, spurfowl inhabit dense undergrowth and are notoriously difficult to see.
Wilpattu Significance
Wilpattu is a stronghold for the Ceylon spurfowl. The park's extensive dry monsoon forests provide ideal habitat. They are more often heard than seen — their distinctive, rising series of whistles is a common sound in the forest. Spotting one requires patience and a good naturalist who knows their calling sites and preferred thickets.
Conservation Status
Least Concern. Endemic to Sri Lanka's dry zone. Protected areas like Wilpattu are critical for its survival.
Best Season to See
Year-round. Most vocal during the breeding season (January-April).
