Wilpattu in November: Birding Peak and Forest Solitude
November is deep in the green season. The northeast monsoon is established. The park is lush, green, and filled with migratory birds. Mammal tracking is challenging — but the birding is world-class. If you want Wilpattu to yourself, this is the month. The park receives very few visitors, and you may find yourself alone at a villu watching painted storks and pelicans.
Weather
Temperatures 22-30°C. Regular rain, mainly in the afternoon and evening. Mornings are often clear and beautiful. High humidity. The landscape is at its greenest. Villus are full. Lotus flowers bloom. The park feels like a different world from the dry season.
Wildlife Highlights
Birds are the headline. The Central Asian Flyway brings Indian Pittas, Blue-tailed Bee-eaters, Eurasian Spoonbills, and flocks of waders. Resident birds are in full breeding activity. Leopards are present but tracking is very challenging. Elephants are spread across the park. Sloth bears are in denser cover. This month rewards patience and bird knowledge.
