Wilpattu in June: Prime Leopard and Sloth Bear Season
June is arguably the best month for big mammal viewing in Wilpattu. The dry season is in full effect, wildlife is concentrated around remaining water, and both leopards and sloth bears are at their most visible. This is when experienced safari-goers plan their trips. The trade-off is higher prices and more visitors — though Wilpattu never feels as crowded as Yala.
Weather
Temperatures 26-35°C. Hot and dry. No rain. Dusty conditions on park roads. Bright, clear mornings with golden-hour light. Midday heat is intense — most wildlife viewing happens in the first 3 hours of daylight and the last 3 before sunset.
Wildlife Highlights
Leopard sightings at their peak — territories are at minimum size, prey is concentrated, and leopards are visible on patrol. Sloth bears are actively feeding on Palu and Weera fruits. Elephant herds are regular at Lunuwewa and Mahaweva. Spotted deer herds of 30+ are common. Crocodiles are highly visible basking on exposed sandbanks. Bird activity is concentrated around water sources in early morning.
Photography
Excellent conditions. Clear air, golden light, predictable wildlife locations. Dawn drives from 5:30-8:30 AM are the most productive photography window. Heat haze develops after 9 AM. Dusty conditions create dramatic light beams in late afternoon.
