About the Spotted Deer (Chital)
The spotted deer, or chital, is the most abundant large mammal in Wilpattu. Its white-spotted coat and elegant gait make it one of the most photographed animals in the park. Stags carry three-pronged antlers that they shed and regrow each year. Chital form herds of 10-50 and serve as the primary prey for Wilpattu's leopards. Their alarm calls — a sharp, repeated bark — are the most reliable indicator that a predator is nearby.

Spotted deer are the lifeline of Wilpattu's predator ecosystem. Where chital go, leopards follow. During the dry season, they concentrate around permanent villus, and leopard territories shrink to match. Herds of 30+ are common at Lunuwewa and Mahaweva. Their alarm calls are the best early warning system you have for leopard sightings.
