Wilpattu in July: Peak Season for Leopards and Elephants
July sits at the heart of Wilpattu's peak season. Wildlife viewing is at its most reliable. Leopards, sloth bears, and elephants are all concentrated around the shrinking villus system. The park is at its busiest — but 'busy' in Wilpattu means 5-6 vehicles at a popular sighting, a fraction of what Yala sees in the same period.
Weather
Temperatures 26-35°C. Hot and bone-dry. Clear skies. Dusty conditions are at their peak. Dawn temperatures are pleasant (22-24°C). The sun is intense by 8 AM. Afternoon thunderstorms are possible but rare.
Wildlife Highlights
All dry season species at peak visibility. Leopard sightings remain excellent. Elephant gatherings at Lunuwewa and Mahaweva are at their largest. Sloth bears continue active feeding. Spotted deer and sambar are heavily concentrated. Mugger crocodiles are visible on every major villu. Bird activity is concentrated at water sources in the first hours of daylight.
Photography
Predictable wildlife + clear light = excellent conditions. The key is being in position at golden hour. Heat haze limits midday photography. Dust creates atmospheric conditions at sunset.
