What is Sri Lankan Elephant?

The largest of three Asian elephant subspecies (Elephas maximus maximus). Males reach 12 feet at the shoulder and weigh up to 12,000 pounds. Wilpattu has 60-80 resident elephants. Unlike Udawalawe or Minneriya, Wilpattu offers intimate herd sightings (5-15 individuals) rather than massive gatherings.
